Surprise in the brush pile

A Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) holds motionless while waiting to ambush prey on a brush pile along a country road near Elkton in rural western Oregon on Saturday, June 12, 2021. A juvenile ground squirrel was foraging nearby.
