First sunset

As the sun sets, a day-old black-tailed deer fawn holds perfectly still as it hides in the tall grass of a pasture on a farm near Elkton in rural western Oregon. The mother of the fawn was nearby.

 

Pissed off rattle snake

A large venomous Pacific rattlesnake holds a defensive posture from its hiding spot in a blackberry thicket along a country road near Elkton in rural western Oregon. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 7,000 to 8,000 people per year receive venomous snake bites in the United States, and about 5 die.

Pacific Northwest heat wave

With the temperature at 111 degrees, people keep cool in the Umpqua River near Elkton in southwestern Oregon on Sunday, June 27, 2021. A record breaking heat wave has hit the Pacific Northwest with temperatures near 115 degrees in some places.

The dangerous heat is expected to continue for several day.

During an early morning rain shower, an adult North American river otter and her yearling pup catch and feed on crayfish in the Umpqua River near Elkton in southwestern Oregon on Sunday, June 13, 2021. Fish is a favored food among the otters, but they also consume various amphibians, freshwater clams, mussels, snails, small turtles and crayfish.

An early start to Oregon wildfire season

A wildfire burns on a ridge near Elkton in rural southwestern Oregon late Tuesday, June 1, 2021. The fire had burned about 200 acres on private timber land as crews continued to fight it into the evening. A dry spring has brought an early fire season to the region. 

No structures were threatened in the blaze.


By Wednesday afternoon the fire appeared to be under control.
