Executive portraits

I shot executive portraits for a Roseburg forest products company last week.
I set up a portable backdrop in a conference room and used a simple lighting setup for formal portraits.
Check out more of my commercial and portrait photography on my website.

First wedding of 2011

I'm shooting my first wedding of 2011 today.  It's in a fixed up barn at the C.H Bailey House Bed and Breakfast near Roseburg.  It should be amazing.

Early bird

An American robin pulls a juicy worm from the snowy ground at River Forks Park near Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011. The area received a few inches of wet snow overnight. Shot with 600mm f/4 and 1.4x teleconverter.

Check out more of my animal and nature pictures.  Reprints are available from the gallery.

Band of salamanders

A group of wild slender salamanders gather on a log in a forested area near Kellogg, Ore., on Sunday Feb. 20, 2011. About 20 separate species of slender salamanders live along the Pacific Coast from Oregon to Mexico. They are lungless and breath through their skin. Did you know a group of salamanders is called a band?  Check out more of my animal and nature pictures here.

Doggies in the window

Dogs named Peaches and Neo gaze from a customized front window of a home in Lookingglass, Ore., on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011. The two dogs spend much of the day looking through the window and watching the street outside their home.
Slow day at the studio on Friday. Instead of waiting for the phone to ring,  I took the phone with me and went for a drive in the country.  I love finding "slice of life" photos.

Oregon snow

Fresh snow clings to the branches of trees in an orchard in the Garden Valley area near Roseburg.  Several inches of heavy wet snow fell in the area overnight.
Lambs doze in their snow covered pasture near Winston.

Moist Oregon

A rain-swollen seasonal creek rushes down a hillside in a forested area near Sutherlin, Ore.  Our area has been hit with a series of moist storm systems over the last few days.
I shot these at dusk tonight with 25-second exposures.

Nature Photography Class

Check out the listing for my nature photography class in the just released spring catalog for Umpqua Community College.  My last couple of classes filled up.  If you're interested don't hesitate to register soon.

Fowl weather

During a heavy rain shower, a couple of Canada geese take to the air from a pond in Dixonville near Roseburg, Ore. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011. See more of my nature and animal pictures here. Reprints are available from the gallery.
The photo agency I work with, Zuma Press, highlighted my goose photo in their Pictures of the Day gallery.

Appropriated art

A few years ago I shot an assignment for The Independent in London about a man in Montana who had been the Marlboro Man in advertising photos in the 1970's.  Along with my portraits, I sent them a couple of duplicate photos of advertisements the man had been in.

A few years later The Independent did a story about the artist Richard Prince.  Prince is famous for his appropriated art.  He sometimes uses images from advertising and sells the "art" as his own.  Some of his appropriated photos sell for over $1 million dollars. In the slide show with the story the Independent used one of the duplicate photos I had sent them.  The photo credit on the old Marlboro ad reads "Robin Loznak".  It's possibly a Sam Abell photo, but thanks to The Independent I have appropriated the picture.  I'm still waiting for my millions.
This Richard Prince "photo" was copied from a Marlboro ad and sold for over $1 million in an auction in 2005.

Photographer Sam Abell talks about his photograph being used by Richard Prince.

Small wonders

It's Nature Picture Saturday.  I found a couple of lovely scenes...
and one not so lovely while exploring around the ranch today. The dew covered mouse was in a pasture with nothing around.  This looks a little suspicious.  I smell a rat.

Honey bee feeding time

I'm feeding my bees today. They get sugar syrup for the next month or two to help them through the lean season. Photo from last spring of a honey bee foraging on an early dandelion bloom.

Senior Portraits with Kaila

Senior portraits with Kaila in Roseburg this week.  At one point during the session she turned to her mom and said, "This is so much fun.  I wish I could have my picture taken every day."
The light was great and Kaila was amazing.

Jeremy and Kelsie's engagement photos

A few favorites from Jeremy and Kelsie's engagement photo session.  Shot on Kelsie's family ranch near Glide, Ore.
One of my friends said it looks like a scene from the Sound of Music.
The wedding will be on the ranch later in the year with a beautiful old barn as a backdrop.  I can't wait.

Groundhog Day

13 years ago, when I lived in State College, Pa., I covered the official Groundhog Day festivities in Punxsutawney.  I was working for the Cente Daily Times which was owned by Knight Ridder at the the time.  Several of my photos made it into their news service archive.  Every year a few news organizations and websites re-use my pictures.  This year Scholastic used the photo of Phil in his tree stump and last year a paper in England used the same photo.
