Window walker

My son Alex spotted this Pacific tree frog climbing on the outside of our bathroom window last night. With Alex directing a flashlight from inside I made a nice picture of the little creature.

My family portrait for the Shepherd's turned out great. We hiked down to a secret little waterfall near their home and set up my lights.  Check my website for my portrait rates. I have a small studio in Roseburg, but location photography is one of my specialties.

Both msnbc.com and the San Francisco Chronicle used my cicada picture yesterday on their websites. It's the 8th photo in the weekly "Animal Tracks" slide show on msnbc.com.

Bird on a barbed wire

A rufous hummingbird perches on a barbed wire fence bordering a pasture near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, July 26, 2010. The western rufous hummingbird, which weighs 3 to 4 grams, winters in Mexico and migrates up to 2000 miles or more to it's summer breeding grounds.
The rufous hummingbird is a feisty little bird. I watched as two of them conducted an impressive air-to-air combat demonstration.

Bug out

It looks like a scene from a science fiction movie. A box elder beetle, right, stands next to the empty molted shell from a cicada on a fence post near Elkton. Most cicadas go through a life cycle that lasts from two to five years. Some species have much longer life cycles, such as the North American genus, Magicicada, which has a number of distinct "broods" that go through either a 17-year or a 13-year life cycle.

Simply stunning

I've been shooting a high-end property near Roseburg this week.

The house overlooks a stunning section of the North Umpqua River.

The owner is putting in a 25-acre vineyard.

The home is not on the market. The owner, who is understandably proud of his property, simply wants to document the home.

Oregon press awards

I won several awards in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association annual contest yesterday. The awards were for work I did last year at The News-Review in Roseburg. The News-Review competes against other medium sized daily newspapers like the Grants Pass Courier, the Albany Democrat-Herald, and the Corvallis Gazette-Times. The News-Review took 2nd place in General Excellence behind the Gazette-Times.

River walk photo gets exposure

Yesterday Zuma Press used one of my river walk photos in their Pictures of the Day gallery. My photography has been represented by the Zuma Press since I left my job as a newspaper photographer earlier this year. Zuma is the largest independent photo agency in the world.

It's hot and the river is cool. The kids were having a great time catching crayfish and swimming in the shallows.

Northern spotted owl

An endangered wild northern spotted owl perches in a tree in an old growth section of forest on Bureau of Land Management property near Roseburg, Ore., on Monday, July 12, 2010. The owl, its mate, and young are being monitored by federal biologists from the BLM. The population of endangered northern spotted owls continues to decline due to habitat loss and other factors. According to Defenders of Wildlife there are fewer than 100 pairs of northern spotted owls in British Columbia, Canada, 1,200 pairs in Oregon, 560 pairs in northern California and 500 pairs in the state of Washington. I spent the morning with a wildlife biologist and two technicians in the forest at a spotted owl nesting site. It was pretty amazing. The owls are unafraid of people.
Look closely on the stump. The claws of the owl are about to grab a mouse placed by one of the technicians.

The owl is about to fly back to its nest with the tasty mouse.

Fawn found in field

Crossing over

I've been hunting for a fawn picture for the last few days. I shot this little guy last night. June is the best month for finding newborn fawns. They're starting to grow up now, which makes them frisky and weary of humans.

Showing off showcase homes

I've been shooting architectural photos for some high end real estate over the last couple of weeks. It's a lot of fun shooting in the sweat light of dusk. These are true showcase homes. The owners and their agents are making a smart choice in getting professional photos of their multi-million dollar listings.
Having a professional photographer shoot your real estate photos may just give you the edge.

Epic photo booth fun

I had my portable photo booth at Josh and Josey's wedding last weekend. It was a blast. The guests loved the booth and the take-home photo strips.

Josey now has an album with pictures and notes from all of her guests.

Along with the photo booth I provide a guest album, a thumb drive with high resolution copies of all images, and an online galley. The pictures in the password protected gallery are sharable through Facebook and email.
