Mane attraction

Rain damp horses stand in their pasture on a farm near Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. The first big winter storm of the year has hit Oregon and several inches of rain have fallen in the Roseburg area over the last few days.
This is off topic, but in the unlikely event that I owned a beauty salon I would name it "Mane Attraction" or possible "Curl up and Dye".

Roseburg wedding photographer

I'm working on a new flyer to hand out at next month's bridal show at the Seven Feather's Casino. Check my website to see my full portfolio and rates. Now is definitely the time to start booking vendors for a spring or summer wedding.

Droplets of water

The winter rains have come back to Oregon.  We had a relative dry spell, but it rained most of the day and it's predicted to keep coming down.  I don't mind the rain one bit.  It makes everything green and I love water in my photos.
The little droplets of water on the clover leaves are really amazing.  Shot with my Nikon AF-S VR 105 f/2.8G IF-ED.  It's one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used.

Oregon ranch sunset

We had an interesting sunset this evening in southwestern Oregon. I believe we're in for a change in the weather. These autocumulus clouds indicate an approaching weather system.

Shot with my Nikon D3s fitted with a Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G Ed Autofocus lens. Fill-flashed with a NikonSB-800 on a TTL sync cord.

...and stay out

A large crow perches on a sign at the Dean Creek Wildlife area near Reedsport, Ore., on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011. The wildlife area, which is managed by the state of Oregon and the BLM, is home to elk, beaver, muskrat, geese, ducks, and great blue heron.

Winter Solstice

Stars are seen in the sky above a barn on a farm in rural Douglas County, Ore., near Roseburg during the night of the Winter Solstice. The Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere was Dec. 21st, and is the longest night of the year.

It's a 30-second exposure with a bit of flashlight on the barn.

I went out again and shot with a 45 minute exposure.

Down under

Light shines through the gills of a wild mushroom found growing in a damp forested area near Elkton, Ore., on Monday, Dec. 19, 2011.

Wide exposure

A couple of my photos are getting very wide exposure this week. The goose picture is running in The Year in Pictures on msnbc.com.  It's in the Viewer's Choice gallery.  They've published the viewer's choice winning picture from each week in 2011.  My goose photo won in April.
My interesting chicken photo is running on the National Geographic website in their Daily Dozen gallery.  Viewers are able to vote for their favorite picture of the day. I'm guessing due to the "yuck" factor my photo was not doing very well in the vote the last time I checked.

Eye of Newt

A rough skinned newt climbs on a mossy log in a forested area of the Coast Range mountains near Elkton, Ore., on Friday, Dec. 16, 2011. The skin of the rough skinned newt produces a potent neurotoxin with no know antidote. The toxin is 10 times more poisonous than potassium cyanide. One newt contains about enough poison to kill 17 people.

I found this little guy this evening. He's actually pretty cute, just don't eat him.

Straight outta Dixonville

From Dixonville, Ore., to NYC. My photo, via zumapress, in the Weekly Animals gallery on nypost.com.

Proud father

My son performed with his high school percussion band last night.  I made a little video of them playing Clocks by Coldplay.  Check it out...

My day in pictures

A few photos from around town this morning.
United States Postal Service clerk Ross Adams wears seasonal Christmas attire as he works to mail packages at the post office in Roseburg, Ore., on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011. Adams has been a postal clerk for 21 years and he dressed up every year for Christmas.  I stopped in to get stamps and decided to also get a few shots of Adams.
On a chilly morning, a wild great blue heron hunts for fish in the shallows of a pond in Roseburg, Ore., on Tuesday
Thick ice forms on grass growing near the flowing South Umpqua River in Roseburg.  Temperatures dipped into the 20s overnight.

Roseburg firefighter train on the fire escape of the Rose Apartments in the late afternoon. I shot this from the parking lot of my studio.
My work is represented by zumapress.com.  They used one of my icy shots in their Pictures of the Day gallery.

We shot thse photos at the C.C. Bailey House Bed and Breakfast near Roseburg on Sunday.
Amazingly this is my 500th photoblog post!

America's 25 coldest cities slideshow

The Daily Beast has published a slideshow with photos from the 25 coldest cities in America.  They used a couple of my photos from when I worked in Montana.
My former employer, the Great Falls Tribune, did a story about the slideshow.

Trotting into the New York Post

My recent turkey photo has trotted right into the New York Post's weekly animals web gallery.  My work is represented by ZumaPRESS.com and you never know where it will pop up.

Creepy crawler

A small centipede curls into a defensive position on a bed of mushrooms growing in a forested area near Elkton, Ore., on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. Worldwide there are estimated to be about 8000 species of centipede. Centipedes are primarily predatory and some species have a hazardous bite.

Down at the pond

On slow days at the studio I sometimes go looking for fun "feature" pictures.  After 20 years as a newspaper photographer I still love looking for little slice-of-life moments.
I love the dainty way the pigeon takes a bite from the cookie.
The little dog also wanted a bite, but not in a dainty way.

Frosty morning in Oregon

Roseburg, Oregon, U.S - Ice crystals form on a small flower growing in a city park. Roseburg experienced below-freezing temperatures causing an icy morning.
It got down to 26 degrees in Roseburg last night. For this part of the country, that's pretty chilly.
A small insect is trapped in a frozen spiderweb.
Zuma Press, the photo agency which represents my work, picked up one of my frosty pictures in their Pictures of the Day gallery. Cool!
Thedaily.com also picked up one of my frosty pictures in their Top Photos gallery.

Seven years

Love my D3s, but I hate Mondays. I had two mirrors in my Roseburg, Ore., photo studio, but thanks to my clumsiness I now only have one.

Christmas photo booth

Testing and setting up my photo booth for a company Christmas Party in Roseburg this weekend. I love my cheesy Christmas backdrop. I still have openings if anyone wants the photo booth at their party.

Turkey crossing

A flock of wild turkeys trot across North Bank Road near Glide, Ore., on Friday Dec. 2, 2011.  Check out this gallery of my nature pictures.  Framed reprints are available and make great gifts.
