The one that got away

Two days before Thanksgiving, wild turkeys forage in a hazelnut orchard along a country road near Elkton in rural southwestern Oregon. According to the National Turkey Federation, Alexander Hamilton once proclaimed: “No citizen of the U.S. shall refrain from turkey on Thanksgiving Day.” Hamilton's proclamation became reality, and about 45 million to 46 million turkeys are consumed each Thanksgiving in the United States.

Resting eagle face

On a cool sunny day, a wild bald eagle perches on a tree overlooking the Umpqua River in SW Oregon. The eagle didn't seem angry or agitated. It just look pissed-off due to its impressive beak, intense eyes, and brow feathers.

Water rushes over the Smith River Falls near Reedsport in southwestern Oregon on Thursday, Nov 10, 2022. Several recent rain storms have added water to the river and increased the flow over the falls.

The National Weather Service is predicting rain through Wednesday for the area. In comparison to other falcons in the United States, American Kestrels exhibit stark sexual dimorphism in coloration and body size. The females are larger, while the males have more colorful plumage.
