My photo in Conde Nast Traveler

Grrrrrr!  It's my photo in Conde Nast Traveler. It's a photo I took several years ago in Alberta, Canada.  The kid in the photo is my son Alex when he was about seven years old.  He turns 16 tomorrow!  Man-o-man did he love dinosaurs.  They picked the picture up from the photo agency I work with: ZUMAPRESS.com .

Bathtub scene

An old bathtub sits in a wooded area on a private ranch in the Coast Range mountains near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012. The tub was probably placed on the hillside to be used as a watering tough for cattle or sheep.

The Year in Pictures on NBC NEWS

NBC News has used a couple of my images in their 2012 Year in Pictures presentation.  The cat photo is in the editor's choice news gallery. Most of the pictures in the galley are epic images capturing war and natural disasters.  A few of the pictures, like mine, capture the lighter side of life.  It's an honor to have my picture represented with so many amazing images. Here is a link to a posting with the entire sequence of the cat and bird interaction.

The grasshopper is in the Users Favorites gallery.  It was one of the winning images in people's choice vote in the Week in Pictures from October.  The cat also won one of the Week in Pictures votes.

We received just a dusting of snow in the valleys of southwestern Oregon today, but the higher elevations got several inches and more is on the way.

Abandoned Chevrolet sedan

An early 1940's Chevrolet sedan sits abandoned and decaying in thick brush along the Umpqua River in rural Douglas County near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012.  When new, a similar vehicle like the 1941 Chevorlet Fleetline sedan, sold for only $877.

The engine in gone and the roof is partially collapsed, but it still looks like it was a nice car.

Stray cat

A stray cat has showed up at the ranch.  She's friendly, hungry and very dirty.  The neighbors think she's the same cat that's been hanging around their house for a while.  If it is the same cat she's been fixed.  We're feeding her outside.  I guess she can stay for a while.

Slimy salamander on nbcnews.com

It's my salamander photo in this week's  Animal Tracks gallery on nbcnews.com.  Just so you know, salamanders are not slimy.  More like smooth and slightly damp.
MSN also picked up the image.

Hello there!

An Oregon Ensatina salamander crawls over a moss and mushroom covered log in a moist forested area near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012.  Ensatina salamanders are lungless and respirate through their skin.

Many of my photos are represented by the photo agency Zumapress.  On their website yesterday they highlighted my salamander photo in their Pictures of the Day gallery.

Small mushroom family

A small mushroom, about the size of a match head, grows along with a slightly larger mushroom on the side of a mossy tree in Roseburg's Stewart Park on Friday, Dec. 8, 2012.  Recent heavy rains in the Pacific Northwest and northern California have been good for moisture loving moss and mushrooms.

I was at the park waiting to shoot photos of an actual person, but noticed the mushrooms.  I had a small lighting kit ready for my job and used it here.  That's why the light looks so good.

Nefertiti the jumping spider

The Guardian in the U.K. used my jumping spider photo to illustrate a story about Nefertiti, the spider which traveled to the International Space Station.  It's an interesting story and it made me a little sad and also proud for the spider.
From the story:
Kelly Carnes of the Smithsonian told the LA Times: "The unexpected loss of this special animal who inspired so many imaginations will be felt throughout the museum community … The body of Nefertiti will be added to the museum's collection of specimens where she will continue to contribute to our understanding of spiders."

Modeling with Annie

Yesterday I worked with a new model on a commercial photo for an advertisement in my Roseburg, Oregon photo studio. She was really great.  I hope the client  thinks so.

Snail crossing

CAUTION: Slow moving critter ahead
A large Pacific sideband snail slowly crosses a rain wet road in rural Douglas County, Oregon near Elkton on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012.  The moisture loving snail should be very content with the recent heavy rains in southwestern Oregon and northern California.
