Fuzzy wuzzy

A furry tussock moth caterpillar climbs on a fencepost along a rural road near Elkton, Ore., on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012.  Some species of tussock moth caterpillars are known to excrete a venom which can cause an itchy or painful reaction in humans. 

Get your dirty stinking beak off of my gopher

A domestic cat named "Sweetie" attempts to defend her kill from a marauding free-range chicken on the back porch of a home in rural Douglas County, Ore., near Elkton on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012. The cat eventually gave up defending the dead gopher and left it to the chicken.

My favorite cat "Scooter" plays in colorful fall leaves outside our home in Southwestern Oregon.

Oregon grape harvest

Raindrops dapple grapes ripening in a small private vineyard near Roseburg in southwestern Oregon, on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012.  A long dry summer in the region has some local wine makers excited about the possibility of a outstanding vintage of wine this year.

Feast of color

A carnivorous yellow jacket wasp cuts a chunk of flesh from the discarded remains of a black tailed deer after it was shot by a hunter in a rural area near Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, Oct. 12, 2012.  A swarm of yellow jackets were busy using their sharp mouth pieces to chew off small chunks to fly back to their hive and feed to hungry larvae.
