Barbie doll illustration

Today I'm shooting an illustration using a Barbie doll and water.  It's for a potential book cover.  I think the photo would also make a good editorial illustration for a story about eating disorders.

Sideband snail

A large Pacific sideband snail crawls slowly over a  damp mossy log in a forested area near Roseburg, Ore., on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012. The Pacific sideband snail is endemic to the Pacific Coast of North America from southern Alaska to northern California. Although their range is large, the snail is vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation.

Uncle Fester

An articulated deer skeleton "lives" in an abandoned  barn on our ranch in southwestern Oregon. It's been in the barn as long as I can remember.  Our best guess is that the deer wondered in to the barn and just never left.  It's strange that no scavengers ever  scattered the bones.  We don't visit the barn often, but tonight my son and I hiked to the remote area and found "Uncle Fester" is still hanging around.

How you doing?

"How You Doin'?"
A wild blacktail deer buck keeps an eye on a nearby doe in a plum orchard in rural Douglas County, Ore., near Roseburg on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012.  The buck was in rut and seemed unconcerned about anything but getting the attention of the doe.

Damp dragonfly

A rain soaked dragonfly clings to a sapling in a plum orchard on a farm near Oakland, Ore., on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.  The late season dragonfly won't have long to live as the damp coldness of winter arrives in southwestern Oregon.

Rain rain go away

Chicken on the sunroof

A domestic chicken stands on the glass sunroof of my car parked outside our home in southwestern Oregon, on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012.  I used a remote flash to light this shot.  Getting the light off the camera almost always makes a photo better. A few seconds after I took this photo the chicken messed up the sunroof.  Have a chicken turd on a sunroof almost always makes it look worse.

The blue and the green

A great blue heron hunts in an alfalfa field on a farm near Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012. The large bird, normally known for wading, appeared to be hunting for rodents and frogs in the bright green field.

Woman in black

I shot this yesterday for a possible book cover.  I don't think it will be used because the publisher is going with a different image.  Anyone want to write a book to fit with this image for the cover?

Mushroom season in the Pacific Northwest

Small mushrooms grow in a mossy forested gully in the Coast Range mountains near Elkton, Ore., on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012.  With the onset of rainy fall weather in the Pacific Northwest mushrooms are sprouting up all over the place.
I've notices a couple of "Mushroom Buyer" sign along the road recently.  I have no idea which mushrooms are edible and which are deadly poisonous so I treat them all as dangerous.

This photo was taken with a wide-angle lens.  I used my closeup lens on the others.

Don't eat the flora or fauna

A wild rough skinned newt curls up in colorful fall leaves at the base of a maple tree in a wooded area along the Umpqua River near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Nov. 5, 2012. The rough skinned newt's body contains highly poisonous tetrodotoxins.  According to experts, one rough skinned newt contains enough toxin to kill 17 people.

With the onset of rainy fall weather in the Pacific Northwest mushrooms are sprouting up everywhere.  In this case the top of a delicate translucent mushroom sits on a colorful fall leaf in a wooded area.  Also probably poisonous.
A closeup of the mushroom gills.  Notice the small insect between the gills at right.

A small white mushroom.

Good to the last drop

A potential client was looking for interesting images of wine.  It turns out this is NOT what they wanted.  It was fun making it anyway.

I used a pellet gun and high shutter speeds to capture the wine.

With colorful fall leaves as a backdrop, a great blue heron hunts for fish at a small waterfall on Deer Creek in Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012.
