Chimney swifts

Just after sunset, thousands of Vaux's swifts descend into an unused chimney at a community arts center in Roseburg, Ore., on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012.  The birds, also known as chimney swifts, are using the chimney as a layover spot on their annual fall migration from their summer breeding areas in northwestern North America to their winter home in Central and South America.

The swifts will be in Roseburg for a week or two before continuing south.
