With its belly flat on the roadway, a western fence lizard soaks up the late afternoon sun and heat from pavement along a country road near Elkton, Ore., on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2012. Western fence lizards are found in California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, and Nevada.
The photos are actually of three different lizards I found basking on a country road near my home. They're only about four inches long, but in this shot the little lizard looks a little like a giant alligator.
The lizards seemed to be enjoying the hot pavement so much they didn't want to move.
