Urban otter

A wild river otter feeds on a fish as it rests on a man made island in a pond at a city park in Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, Sept. 28, 2012. North American river otters are found throughout North America inhabiting inland waterways and coastal regions.  The fir trade of the 1900s decimated their populations in many regions, but with recent reintroductions and conservation, they're making comeback in many areas.

I spotted the otter at the park a few weeks ago, but was not able to get any good photos.  I've been check back at various times each day.  Today I got lucky again and made a few pictures.  It's a very impressive animal to be seeing inside the city limits.

Studio product photography

Recently I've been shooting products in my Roseburg, Oregon photo studio.  The work was for a publisher looking for illustrations.
It's fun to play around with light in a controlled situation.

The bumbling caterpillar

We harvested about 13,000 pounds of prune plums on our ranch in southwestern Oregon over the last two days.  Along with the fruit, we ended up  with a couple of large green caterpillars...

Tomato surprise

A Pacific tree frog perches on a cherry tomato in a backyard raised-bed garden near Oakland, Oregon. The frog seemed pretty content on the tomato and didn't even flinch for the closeup photos.

Most of the time I intentionally search out interesting photos.  In this case I was picking tomatoes and the frog was just sitting there.
The photo agency which represents my work, ZUMAPRESS.com, used the frog in their Pictures of the Day Gallery.

Canine nap

A dog pokes its nose out of a van window as it naps in a city parking lot in Roseburg.  The owner was sitting on a nearby bench reading a novel.
The Sacramento Bee picked up the photo, via ZUMAPRESS.com, for their Day in Pictures gallery.

Chimney swift time-lapse movie

This evening I shot a little time-lapse movie of the Vaux's swifts settle into a chimney during a layover on their annual migration through Roseburg, Ore.  It's not perfect, but it's kinda fun. I only had a couple of minutes to get the key footage of the birds.  I may go back next week and get some more frames.

Fun with water drops

A spent a couple of hours playing with water and lighting in the studio today.  I don't have a laser trigger so it was a lot of hit and miss to get the right shots.
Shooting a water from from above is more difficult than I expected.
Shooting from the side is a little easier.

Reflected glory

The rising sun highlights clouds reflected in the smooth surface of the South Umpqua River as it flows through Roseburg.  The South Umpqua River joins the North Umpqua River a few miles west of Roseburg.  The Umpqua River and tributaries flow from the Cascade Mountains in the east to the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the principal rivers of the Oregon coast.

Rural Oregon morning

I woke up early on Sunday and made a few photos.
The weather in September in southwestern Oregon is the best. We have warm sunny days and cool evenings.
Number 87 seems to be enjoying the view above the morning fog.
Down in the river bottom it takes longer for the fog to burn off.
