Cat carrier

My son's cat Eclipse is not a fan of the cat carrier.
However, ZumaPress is a fan of the photo and used it in their Pictures of the Day gallery.

The morel of the story

Wild morel mushrooms grow on a hillside in rural Douglas County, Ore. Morel mushrooms are prized by gourmet cooks particularly for French cuisine.  The morel mushroom has many colorful local names in the United States including molly moochers, hickory chickens, and dryland fish.
I found the morels growing in a recent clearcut near my home in southwestern Oregon.
While I was photography the mushrooms a cheeky little ladybug made a cameo appearance. You can also see her/him in the photo above at right.

I picked a few dozen and sauteed them with butter and olive oil for dinner.

Some like it wet

A western red-backed salamander climbs on a mossy rain-soaked log in a forested area near Elkton, Ore., on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012. The western red-backed salamander lives and breeds entirely on land in the damp coastal forests along the Pacific coast of North America from British Columba to southern Oregon.
Shot with my Nikon D3s, AF-S 105mm micro-nikkor f/2.8 lens. That lens is one sweet hunk of glass.

Signs of spring

A small flower pushes up through a carpet of dew coated clover leaves in a field near my home this morning.  We normally have a pretty mild winter, but the area has recently been experiencing spring-like weather.

My photo on National Geographic website

My chicken photo is on the National Geographic Society's website.  It's part of their Daily Dozen web gallery.  Readers are encouraged to rate the pictures. My photo is funny, but there are some really amazing photos in the gallery.

Actor headshots

Professional actor, magician, and writer Charles Schneider stopped by my Roseburg, Ore., studio yesterday for some updated headshots. He sometimes gets cast in scary roles, but he's really a true gentleman.

Pacific sideband snail

A large Pacific sideband snail craws slowly through a damp mossy area in a forested area near Roseburg, Ore., on Monday, Feb. 21, 2012. The Pacific sideband snail is endemic to the Pacific Coast of North America from southern Alaska to northern California. Although their range is large, the snail is vulnerable to habitat loss and fragmentation.
I used flash on a synch-cord for fill lighting on the slow moving fellow.

Baa, baa, baa black lambs

Three young lambs warm themselves in the morning sun in a pasture on a farm near Oakland, Ore., on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012. January and February are the typical months for lambs to be born in Oregon.

Mossy island

A great blue heron perches on a mossy rock island in the middle of the North Umpqua River near Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012. The great blue heron is the largest North American Heron.

From Roseburg to London

The early bird gets his photos in The Telegraph's Pictures of the day gallery.   The photos were picked up by ZumaPress.com and shared with Rex Features in the U.K.
My bird photo was also picked up by The NewYork Post.

The early bird

An American robin struggles to pull a large juicy worm from the ground at River Forks Park near Roseburg, Ore., on Thursday, Feb 16, 2012. After yanking and pulling, the bird finally freed the worm and gobbled it up.

He got the worm, but it was a lot of work.

A nest with a view

Great views of the Umpqua River. Utilities included.
A pair of Canada geese stand on a platform designed for an osprey nest high on a utility pole overlooking the Umpqua River in Roseburg, Ore., on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012.  If the geese decide to nest on the pole they will not be welcomed by the osprey when they return to the area in a few weeks from their winter migration.
My goose photo was picked up for this week's Animal Tracks web gallery on msnbc.com.

Being green

It's not easy being green...
My photo on this week's Animal Tracks slideshow on msnbc..com. The slideshow format is back. http://on.msnbc.com/w6bP5Z

I shot this with a Nikon  D3S, Nikon SB-600 flash on a synch-cord to the right, and a LED headlamp filling on the left.  My camera was so low in the water I accidentally scooped up some of the pond in the lens hood.

POYi second round nature photos

It was difficult to tell because the audio was off in the webcast, but I think these are my photos which made it into the second round in the Science/Natural History category at Pictures of the Year International contest this morning. In subsequent rounds all of my photos were eliminated. Look to see the winning images on the POYi website in the next couple of days.

Ant and mushroom plant

An ant climbs through a virtual forest of small mushrooms growing on a tree stump on a hillside near Elkton, Ore., on Saturday Feb. 11, 2012.
I've always loved looking at the little details of the world. The ant was one cool little dude.  He looked like the guard in a mushroom kingdom.
Shot with my Nikon D3S and AS-S Micro 105mm f/2.8G lens.  It's one amazing piece of glass!  It's the same lens I used to shoot most of the senior portraits in my previous post.

Roseburg senior portraits with Megan

I photographed senior portraits with Megan in Roseburg this week.  We shot in my downtown Roseburg photo studio and at a cool spot near the Umpqua River.

Check my website to see more of my work.  Call or email to set up an appointment.
Megan is a hunter and wanted a few shots with her dad's rifle.
Dad helped out with the reflector.

POYi second round

My mural photo from Cottage Grove, Ore., made it into the second round of judging in the feature photo category in the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) this morning.  There were several thousand entries and about 400 images made it into the second round. The contest continues for the next week with multiple other categories.
