Hang in there little guy

A snail dangles from a fern bush growing in a heavily forested area in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains near Idleyld Park, Ore., on Tuesday, Jan 31, 2012.

Roosevelt elk in Oregon

A herd of wild Roosevelt elk graze in an open area of the Coast Range Mountains near Elton, Ore., Ore., on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2012.  Roosevelt Elk are the largest of the four subspecies of elk in North America.
I crept up pretty close to the herd before they noticed me. They didn't seen very concerned.  Shot with my Nikon 300mm f/2.8 and 1.4x Nikon teleconverter on my Nikon D3S body.  My 600mm f/4 is in the shop.  I can't wait to get it back.  The Nikon D4  has just been released. The performance stats are amazing.

Fine art prints of my animal and nature pictures are available.  Click the online gallery to order now.

Ribbit, ribbit, ribbit

A wild male Pacific tree frog fills its vocal sack while making its mating call as it floats in a seasonal pond  on a farm near Roseburg, Ore., on Wednesday, Jan 25, 2012.  Pacific tree frogs are the most common frog on the west coast of North America. The 5 cm. long frogs are mostly nocturnal.
The sound at the pond was deafening.
The U.K. Telegraph picked up one of my tree frog photos, via ZumaPress.com, for the Pictures of the Day Gallery.

Toying around

I recently upgraded my Roseburg, Oregon photo studio with a better seamless background setup. It's perfect for product photography.  For practice with lighting I used a few of my son's toys.
Using my studio lights for visual effect if really fun.
Godzilla was my all-time favorite monster when I was growing up.

My photo on Nationalgeographic.com

My photo is currently up on the National Geographic Society website in their Daily Dozen web gallery. Viewers can vote for their favorites and the top photos are highlighted each month in the magazine and on the Nat. Geo. Facebook page. My mother always says I should be published in National Geographic. This one's for you, Mom.

Here is another recent photo of mine on the National Geographic website.

Life in monocolor

Making the best of a rainy day.  I love the way the little hairs and raindrops look in this black and white version of a clover. It looks a little like an image from a scanning electron microscope.  Did you know you can buy your very own used scanning electron microscope on ebay for as little as $1100?

Flooded orchard

The orchard is flooded from all the recent rain.  At least the rain makes everything nice and green.

Wood is good

An advertisement featuring some of my commercial photography will soon be running in national trade magazines.  The ad was designed by my friends at Creative Media Group for Roseburg Forest Products.

Flooding in Oregon

A boy pushes his bike through floodwater in Drain, Ore.  Snow, which hit the area earlier in the week, turned to torrential rains and is now causing area streams and rivers to flood. Several homes and streets along Elk Creek in Drain are flooded from the heavy rains.

The North Umpqua River, at near flood stage, flows over the Winchester Dam in Roseburg, Ore.  Snow, which hit the Roseburg area earlier in the week, turned to torrential rains and is now causing area streams and rivers to flood.
The photo agency I work with, ZumaPress, used one of my flooding pictures in their Pictures of the Day gallery.

The Week in Pictures

My chicken photo, via Zumapress.com, is in The Week in Pictures gallery on msnbc.com.  It's up against some pretty amazing pictures in the people's choice vote.

My photos on Today.com

Today.com used a couple of my snowy animal pictures in their Animal Tracks gallery today.  The robin photo and a photo of a sheep later in the gallery are mine. The snow from earlier this week is gone in the valleys.  Now we're getting lots of rain and the little creeks are starting to flood.

Why?

It looked to me that she was looking for food.

Snowbird

An American robin leaps from a snowy fencepost along a pasture on a farm near Oakland, Ore., on Monday, Jan. 16, 2012. The bird was eating berries from a nearby bush.  About two inches of snow fell in the area overnight.

Shot with my Nikon D3s with 300mm f/2.8 lens and 1.4x teleconverter.  My 600mm lens is still in the shop and I miss it dearly.

Snow scene

A view from near the high point on the ranch.  That's my mother-in-law's house.  We live a bit further down the hill in the valley. We don't get much snow here in southwestern Oregon.  Most of our precipitation is in more of a liquid form.

Not so baaad

We don't get much snow here in southwestern Oregon, but when we do it's not so bad.

In the bag

Our calico cat named Sweetie plays a game of hide-and-seek inside a plastic shopping bag at our home near Oakland, Ore., on Friday, Jan 13, 2012.  Outside of North America calico cats are known as tortoiseshell-and-white. Calico refers only to the color pattern of the fur and not to a breed. Calicoes are nearly always female.

Down on the Farm

A newly born lamb chews on a gate in a pasture on a farm in rural Douglas County, Ore., near Glide on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012. January and February are the lambing months in rural Oregon.
