Halloween graveyard

The IOOF Cemetery in Roseburg, Ore., on Oct. 31, 2011.  The cemetery opened in 1859 and is the final resting spot for many of the local pioneers.

Halloween blast

A pumpkin is fired from cannon during a Halloween event at the Henry Estate Winery in Umpqua, Ore., on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011. The cannon used black powder to fire the pumpkins several hundred yards at a target in the empty field.

Running for cover after lighting the fuse to a black powder charge placed under an anvil during the event at the Henry winery. The tradition of anvil firing, also known as anvil shooting and anvil launching, was once popular and was often a replacement for fireworks during celebrations.

Spectators watch as a steel anvil is launched into the air by the blast from a black powder charge.

A feast of color

It was a feast of color Saturday morning at the Umpqua Valley Farmers' Market in Roseburg.  My family has a stand this year at the market.  We're selling farm fresh prunes from our dryer.  It's our first year at the farmers' market and we're having a lot of fun.  Next Saturday (Oct. 29, 2011) is the last market of the year.

South Umpqua River

Dusk falls, as the South Umpqua River rushes past clumps of grass growing in a rocky area near Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, Oct. 21, 2011. The South Umpqua River joins the North Umpqua River six miles northwest of Roseburg.  The Umpqua River is one of the principle rivers of the Oregon coast running for 111 miles from  the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. The Umpqua River boasts world class fly-fishing along with salmon, sturgeon, and small-mouth bass fishing.

Roseburg Farmer's Market booth

Besides being an award winning photojournalist I'm also a farmer.  I live on my wife's family farm were we grow and dry prune plums. This Saturday, for the fist time, we'll have a booth at the Umpqua Valley Farmer's Market in Roseburg, Oregon.  Our local prunes, direct from the dryer, are really tasty and healthy.  We'll have zesty old-time Italian prunes and the sweet-plump Brooks variety.
The farmer's market is on Diamond Lake Blvd., and is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Fisher Farm has been in my wife's family since 1867.
